How I tricked myself into writing
We live in the 21st century with limitless opportunities compared to the past. Information flows to us from every direction, making it hard to focus, work, and not only consume and get easy dopamine.
Establishing a new habit is more and more difficult.
“Would you like to watch TV instead?”
“What about your favorite sports team?”
“Hey, you haven’t played this game for a while!”
Those are just examples of possible alternatives offered by our brains.
“Okay, how do I trick my brain?”
I asked myself, knowing it was playing tricks against me.
“I know!”
I declared and designed a trick how to outsmart myself.
I needed to connect my new habit to a positive experience.
No, that does not mean I drink wine once I write a sentence.
I started with the clothing. I wanted to feel special. I bought a watch and shirt that I have been dreaming about. I have polished my shoes. I geared up like never before and started writing.
Every time I finished my writing session, I changed my clothes. The fancy uniform was reserved only for writing. I felt like an actor. If you observe me, you might call me crazy.
I tell you what, I don’t care!
I started to look forward to my writing session. Initially, it might be about the clothing, but today, it is more about the progress and story I produce. I still occasionally dress up in my uniform, but I don’t need to. I write.
