Whispers In The Dark

The last remnants of daylight painted the horizon with strokes of orange and pink. It did not last long, and the skyline darkened. The glittering stars stood in great contrast to the hectic rush of city life. The neverending noise was replaced by the sounds of wind whispering secrets to the tree branches, accompanied by a buzzing symphony.

How far are the stars? Is there any alien life? Questions that have bothered people for centuries flooded his mind. He imagined himself as a spaceship commander conquering the galaxies, and all of the problems suddenly disappeared as they traveled with him. The vision brought him a temporary sense of peace, even though the interstellar travel was pure science fiction.

Distant dog barks interrupted his dream. Oh no! Are they here? Whatever the reason, the dogs must send a warning! Hey, a stranger in the neighborhood. Stay alert! His face took a sick, greenish hue. He puffed out, lips pressed together tight, forming a grimace as if he was desperately trying to hold back the urge to vomit. The overwhelming pressure played with him, twisting his stomach left and right.

Breathe, breathe! He began with a slow and deliberate inhale through the nose. The cool air filled his lungs and expanded his chest. His stomach rose gently. I can’t give up! The barks intensified. He lay down and hid between the bushes, expecting the worst. Clenched fist and prepared for a fight, he straightened his ears. Nothing! Out of nowhere, there was a silence.

Is it safe? Was it a false alarm? Frightened and tired, he was scared to get the answer. The suspense hung in the air.

Twenty minutes passed, and nothing happened. It was now or never! He stood up, stretched his legs, and ran. The sound of cracking wood echoed in the forest. One sharp tree branch after another, he navigated through the dangerous maze. Minute after minute, until he found his hideout — a mysterious cave. Feeling like a time traveler, he was safe for the night.
